Bill Shell

C. William “Bill” Shell, 90, a longtime Dover resident died Friday, December 31, 2021 in his home following a brief illness. Bill was a retired barber having owned the former Shell Barber Shop in Dover that he operated for 18 years. He was a popular tour guide at the Warther Museum in Dover where he worked for 27 years. He also previously owned and operated S&S Car Wash in Dover and the B&L Drive Thru in Shanesville and was formerly a car salesman at Huebner Chevrolet in Carrollton. Born September 16, 1931 in West Union, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Everett and Louise (Sininger) Shell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry and a sister, Mary (William) Willis. Bill was an active member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover where was sung in the choir for over 50 years and was in the Men’s Fellowship of the church. He was a member of the Tuscarawas #59 Masonic Lodge in Dover and the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton. He was previously a member of the Dover Jaycees and was proud of being responsible for the Mooney Warther bust located in the lobby of the museum that was presented to Mooney on Mooney Warther Day, June 8, 1963. After graduating from the former Sugarcreek Shanesville High School in 1949, Bill proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was a control tower operator in Japan and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, United National Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Bill will be sadly missed by his family including his wife of 56 years, Lois (Gerber) Shell. They were married on June 20, 1965; three daughters, Sheila (Van) Harmon of Dover, Lezlie Shell of Texas and Lesa (Gary) Plantz of New York; a son, Brad (Barbara) Shell of Kensington, Ohio along with seven grandchildren, Dustin (Stephanie) Shell, Jordan (Priscilla) Harmon, Nick (Becca) Shell, Jeremy (Kristen) Harmon, Corrie Lanzer, Matthew Ashbocker and Elizabeth (Eric) Milsap and nine great grandchildren. Private services will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Pastor Dotty Hartzell officiating along with a masonic service. A military graveside service will be conducted by the New Phila VFW on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022 beginning at 11am in the Dover Burial Park. A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held at the Warther Museum in June 2022.
